New York City has set some of the most aggressive targets for reduction of greenhouse gas emissions in the world. Its buildings, both commercial and residential, contribute to nearly 70 percent of the city’s carbon emissions.
The Climate Mobilization Act of 2019 includes several bills that target buildings greater than 25,000 square feet as they are responsible for 30 percent of those emissions; the legislation mandates a 40 percent reduction by 2030 from a 2005 baseline, and an 80 percent reduction by 2050.
