Dear NYPH members,
Electrification is a critical step to decarbonization. Recent natural disasters in California, Florida, and North Carolina have emphasized the need to accelerate our efforts to decarbonize to mitigate the worst effects of the ongoing climate crisis. In 2023, New York State passed the All Electric Buildings Act (AEBA) which is scheduled to go into effect in 2026 and apply to new construction. In support of this effort, drafts of the next version of NYS energy code includes language supporting electrification. However, in recent weeks there have been some signs of wavering in Albany which has led advocates to fear an attempt to postpone or weaken the AEBA and/or the next energy code update. The AEBA’s opposition is focused on concerns around the feasibility (cost + supply chain) of all electric construction for single family residences in New York State, a concern advocates believe is overstated and not accounting for the social benefits of electrification for health and grid efficiency.
To keep this critical law on track, New York Passive House and the State and Local Policy Working Group are seeking support from membership. We are looking to demonstrate to Albany that electrification is feasible, effective, and supported by the wider AEC community in the Empire State. You can support this effort with the following actions:
- Submit all-electric projects that are in operation or construction in New York State using this form. The focus is on single-family residences, but we welcome other examples as well. Form
- Sign onto our advocacy letter by adding your name to our advocacy letter here. Sign Here
Responses must be received no later than January 31st. If there are any questions please reach out the State and Local Policy Working Group here:
Sincerely,
NYPH Board of Directors
