What if a building could act like a tree—capturing carbon dioxide, purifying the air, and restoring the environment? That was the question posed to readers in today’s issue of The Times newspaper by Design Partner Kent Jackson.

In the op-ed, he describes how innovations in design and materials can make this concept a reality with Urban Sequoia, a radical systems-based approach to constructing resilient cities. Yet in order to realize this idea—which is buildable today—he asserts that we need consensus among funders, municipalities, and clients on the value of reducing our carbon footprint.
