Regenerative Metropolis ’25 – Call for Symposium Session Proposals

Passive House’s reliable and superior energy performance with its myriad of co-benefits, is the cornerstone of the architectural solutions we require to be able to thrive. It is a firm foundation upon which we can build a regenerative society that repairs ecosystems damage, and begins to again increase all life.

The past few years of our “Regenerative Metropolis” symposium has included a significant focus on Passive House design as it relates to embodied carbon, with last year diving more deeply into highlighting the impact of carbon storing construction material’s origins in aligned regenerative systems. This year, we would like to invite you to share how passive house design relates to any aspects of regenerative design that are dear to your interests or practice.

There is a rising consciousness emerging revealing how comprehensive the field of sustainability is truly required to be if we are to meaningfully move towards regeneration. Only by broadening the lenses of our understanding can we take advantage of synergies of our actions across systems, and exponentially increase positive impacts. Do you have a project or design framework, built or un-built, that uses passive house (certified or not) as the core of a comprehensive regenerative design?  How do the Passive House principles aid, align or misalign with these other critical measures required of good architecture at this juncture?

For example, how does Passive House design influence an approach to the renewable grid development, biophilic design, community building, resiliency, our changing climate, net zero carbon targets or the AIA’s framework for design excellence? Does it affect a project’s strategy for material health, environmental or social justice, zero waste, or the circular economy?  Are there other sustainable construction technologies or strategies you would or would not integrate onto a passive house project, and why? What other disciplines should the construction and growing Passive House community within it better understand, in order to integrate the full spectrum of regenerative design practices or do so more effectively?

Each year the interest in our Regenerative Metropolis symposium grows and we eagerly welcome your input at this stage!  We hope you can share your experience and current investigations with this curious community!
