801 East 181st street is a shallow corner site with majority southern exposure, creating a design challenge. Much of the design consideration was on heat gain reduction, which was addressed by exploring and optimizing the sunshade devices, recessing windows from the facade and selecting glazing with high SHGC. The window fin sunshades are the prominent architecture feature on the south facade, which will change throughout day as the shadow from the window fin dances across the brick facade.
The building massing steps back from the corner in response to the neighborhood’s low to medium density and the park and community garden located at opposite corners. The setback from the street also allows for a landscaped buffer, providing privacy for the first-floor residents. The massing is divided into three distinct segments and, using different brick finish, reduces the scale of this multifamily building to blend into the neighborhood.
