This new 146,000 SF ultra-low energy use building designed to the rigorous Passive House standards will be a first for a NYC public school.
The building houses a New York City public primary school and Khalil Gibran International Academy, an Arabic language public high school. The project is a part of Alloy Development’s 100 Flatbush, a mixed-use development in Downtown Brooklyn. This community-oriented project includes units of mixed-income housing, office space, retail space, and a new cultural facility in a preserved historic structure.
The smaller scale primary school opens onto a brownstone-lined street while the Khalil Gibran International Academy’s larger scale is situated on Flatbush Avenue, a major thoroughfare with large scale commercial, cultural and residential development. It is located near Atlantic Terminal, the Brooklyn Cultural District, and Barclays Center. The existing Khalil Gibran International Academy, an Arabic language public high school, will have a new and expanded state-of-the-art home and increased school capacity for students. It will share facilities – such as a new cafeteria, gymnasium, and library – with a new public primary school on State Street.
The schools are being designed to rigorous Passive House standards as well as the New York City School Construction Authority Design Requirements, and are expected to be operational by 2023.
