We are a team of over 130 architects, landscape architects, engineers, builders, furniture designers, makers, writers, filmmakers, and researchers representing 20 countries across the globe. We are not here merely to design buildings. We are here to champion our living world – to design for a flourishing planet that reinstates humanity within nature. We accomplish this by researching, building, and advocating for design that promotes justice and dignity.

James Kitchin – Director of Engineering and Performance & Provenance | MASS Design Group

James is a structural and civil engineer with deep expertise in designing with natural and healthy materials. He has led research and policy change around building materials and embodied carbon. James strives to minimize the negative footprint of the built environment through intimate knowledge of place and process, and to maximize the maker’s handprint through collaboration. As the lead of the Performance & Provenance department and Director of MASS’s Abundant Futures Design Lab, he is committed to imagining, advocating, and implementing regenerative practices. He resides in Bozeman, MT.

Caitlin Taylor – Lead of the Food Systems Design Lab | MASS Design Group

Caitlin is an architect and farmer; she is the co-founder of Four Root Farm, an organic vegetable farm in East Haddam where she lives with her family. She has many years of interdisciplinary experience in the fields of architecture and construction, systems design, and agriculture. Currently working at the interface between our built environment and our food systems, she addresses the generational opportunity of redesigning and rebuilding regional food infrastructure through design and development projects at a range of scales. Alongside regular academic appointments at Yale School of Architecture, Caitlin is a Consulting Principal at MASS Design Group, where she led the Food Systems Design Lab from 2017-2023. Caitlin has a degree in Biochemistry from Wesleyan University, and a Masters of Architecture from the Yale School of Architecture.

Our mission is to research, build, and advocate for architecture that promotes justice and human dignity.

MASS Design Group was founded on the understanding that architecture’s influence reaches beyond individual buildings. MASS (Model of Architecture Serving Society) believes that architecture has a critical role to play in supporting communities to confront history, shape new narratives, collectively heal and project new possibilities for the future.
